Wax play is a form of temperature play where hot molten wax is dripped onto the body.

Background

Methods

Risks

  • Wax burns
  • Allergic reactions
  • Fires started from the open flame

Risk mitigation

Choosing a candle

  • Use candles with a low melting point, particularly those designed for wax play. Soy and paraffin melt at lower temperatures, while beeswax should be avoided. Additives including color and perfume can increase the wax's melting point and may also trigger allergies or irritation on sensitive skin.
  • Candles should be a consistent color from top to bottom with no decoration or paint, as different formulations and materials can have drastically different melting points.
  • The dominant partner should drip a small amount of wax onto their wrist before to ensure the wax melts at a low enough temperature to avoid burns. Likewise, the submissive partner should test the molten wax on their own skin to check for irritation or itchiness. Perform this test with each new candle, even those from the same manufacturer, as melting points may differ.

Wax application

  • Avoid sensitive areas such as the face, genitals, orifices, and nipples. Avoid piercings and open wounds. These areas can be covered to avoid splashes and accidental drips. Be aware that the wax will be more difficult and painful to remove from hairy areas. Oiling the skin before applying wax will make removal easier.
  • Hold the candle at least 0.5 meters (18 inches) from the skin to allow the wax to cool before contact.
  • As a beginner dominant partner, start with small drips and move the candle constantly. Large amounts of wax hold more thermal energy and are more likely to cause burns. Be cautious of valleys in the skin where wax can pool. Allow wax to cool before reapplying in the same spot.
  • If a large amount of wax accidentally falls on the skin, the dom can mitigate burns by quickly smearing the wax with the palm of the hand to thin the wax and increase the exposed surface area
  • Keep a cold wet washcloth nearby to soothe burns

Avoiding fires

  • Extinguish the candle before setting it down.
  • Be mindful of hair, fabric, and other flammable materials above the candle.
  • The dominant partner could drop the candle if hot wax unexpectedly drips on their hand. Be mindful of how the candle is held.
  • Keep a small fire extinguisher nearby.
