A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is an infection that is spread by sexual activity. An STI may also be called a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or veneral disease (VD); however, a person who has been infected with an STI may not have any symptoms of a "disease".
The risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections can be reduced with safer sex practices such as the proper use of condoms and having fewer sexual partners.
