A gag is a device that is intended to prevent its wearer from speaking, generally by filling or blocking the mouth.

Background

Appeal

  • Gags prevent the wearer from speaking, which contributes to power dynamics and submissive headspaces.
  • Gags are frequently used as a bondage accessory, further increasing the helplessness of the submissive and adding to the power dynamic.
  • Many types of gags limit a person's ability to breathe through the mouth, which may be appealing to people who are interested in breath play, as the person's breath can be cut off by simply sealing the nose.
  • Many types of gags cause the wearer to drool, which some people may find appealing.

Methods

There are many types of gags.

The Wikipedia article contains a very comprehensive list.

Risks & risk mitigation

Communication

Gags necessarily prevent clear communication between the submissive and dominant, making it difficult to communicate discomfort or feedback during a scene.

Mitigation

Consider developing a communication scheme before starting the scene. For example, asking the submissive to grunt a certain number of times works for many standard scenes.

  • 1 grunt: "yes"
  • 2 grunts: "no"
  • 3 grunts: "stop and remove the gag so I can say something"

In addition, consider creating a list of standard questions for the dominant to ask the submissive that can be answered with the chosen communication scheme.

Asphyxiation

Many types of gags limit the person's ability to breathe through the mouth. This poses a potential asphyxiation risk if the person has difficulty breathing through their nose, e.g. if they (1) are recovering from a respiratory illness (2) are allergic to pollen or other substances, or (3) have a deviated septum.

Mitigation

  • Ensure that the person is capable of breathing through their nose before applying a gag.
  • Avoid leaving a gagged person unattended, especially if there are any concerns about their ability to breathe through their nose.
  • Try other types of gags if breathing through the nose is a significant concern.
  • Some people may find it easier to breathe through their nose when their head is placed in certain positions.

Choking

Many types of gags limit the person's ability to swallow and/or spit. This poses a potential choking hazard if saliva builds up inside the person's mouth. Additionally, some types of gags may become a choking hazard if the gag is too small or not secured properly, and fall into the person's throat.

Mitigation

  • Place the person with their head tilted slightly forward so saliva naturally drains out of the mouth. Avoid positions where the person's head is tilted backwards, as this lets saliva drain into the throat.
  • Ensure that gags are properly sized and securely fastened.

Tape

Tape adhesive may cause damage to the person's skin and hair, especially when removed. As an alternative, consider tapes that are self-adhesive but do not adhere to skin, such as vet wrap.

Mitigation

  • Apply tape to a smaller portion of the person's head.
  • Instead of applying the tape gag directly to the person's face, consider wrapping the person's head with plastic wrap first, then applying tape over the plastic wrap.
  • When removing tape gags, pull slowly. Consider using vegetable oil or other lubricants to weaken the adhesive.
